Explanation
Mammals feed their young with milk. They are warm-blooded, most have hair or fur, and their brain is well developed. Some live on land (deer, bear, lion), some in water (whale, dolphin); humans are mammals too. Whales and dolphins are not fish; they are mammals. Predators (lion, wolf) have eyes at the front, which helps judge distance; herbivores (horse, rabbit, elephant) have eyes at the sides for a wide view; omnivores (bear, human) eat both plants and meat. People tamed the dog first, then goat, sheep, cow and horse. The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth.
Worked examples
A dolphin lives in water but feeds its baby milk and breathes with lungs, so it is a mammal.
People get milk and meat from cows, wool and milk from sheep, and use horses to carry loads.
Class activity
“Three groups”: draw three columns: predator, herbivore, omnivore. Classmates call out mammals (wolf, rabbit, bear, cow, lion, camel...) and you write them in the columns.
Practice
1
Why are mammals given this name?
Because they feed their babies with milk.
2
Is a whale a fish or a mammal? Why?
A mammal: it feeds its calf milk and breathes with lungs.
3
Why are a predator’s eyes at the front of its head?
To judge the distance to the prey accurately.
