Deserts and their riches
A desert is a dry place with very little rain. Only plants and animals that can stand drought live there. Kinds of desert: sandy (dunes called barkhans), clay (dry soil cracks into polygons), stony, and salt. The desert is rich: sand for building, oil, natural gas, gold and marble are taken from it. Glass and bricks are made from sand. Petrol and plastic come from oil, and gas heats homes and cooks food. Saxaul roots hold the sand and protect it from the wind. A camel can go many days without water, and its milk and wool are used. Nature reserves have been set up to protect rare animals such as deer and saiga.
“Camel visiting card”: draw a camel and write its height, home, food and uses (milk, wool, carrying loads). If you like, make a card for another desert animal.
