Explanation

Living nature cannot exist without non-living nature. The Sun gives light and warmth: plants make food in their leaves in the light, and animals use light to see. Water is needed by every living thing: a plant draws it up with its roots, animals and people drink it. Air is needed for breathing. Conclusion: all living things need food, warmth, water and air.

Worked examples
Without the Sun a plant stops growing; without plants animals have no food.
In a drought plants dry up for lack of water.
Class activity

Experiment “Light and plants”: take two similar bean seedlings (or house plants). Put one by the window and the other in a closed cupboard. Water both equally. Observe and draw them daily for a week. Which stayed green and strong? Conclusion: plants need light.
