Explanation
Animals live everywhere on Earth: in forests, deserts, mountains and water. Animals that people do not look after are called wild: they build their own dens, find their own food and raise their own young. Predators eat other animals (wolf, lion). Herbivores eat grass and leaves (rabbit, deer). Some, like the bear, eat both plants and meat. The science of animals is zoology and the animal world is called fauna.
Worked examples
Wolf: predator; rabbit: herbivore; bear: eats both plants and meat.
A fish lives in water, a mole underground, a swallow in the air and on land.
Class activity
“Who eats whom?” game: sort animal pictures (wolf, rabbit, lion, deer, bear, fox) into three groups: predator, herbivore, omnivore. Then sort them again by habitat: forest, desert, water. Which animal can fit more than one group?
