Explanation
People talk to share their thoughts. Speech means talking with words and sentences; it can be spoken or written. A gesture is explaining with movements of the hand, head or leg. Facial expression shows feelings with the face: joy, sadness, surprise. Animals cannot talk, but they also show how they feel with sounds and movements.
Worked examples
Nodding the head means “yes”, shaking it means “no”.
When a dog wags its tail, it shows it is happy.
Class activity
“Talk without words”: in pairs, act out inviting a friend to visit first with words, then without words (only gestures and facial expressions). Which was easier and which harder? What was easy to express without words?
