Explanation
The more comfortable our life becomes, the more harm is done to nature. The first problem is household waste: plastic containers, wrappers, packaging, food scraps. If they get into rivers and lakes they harm fish and birds. The second problem is cutting down trees: trees give oxygen, shade and shelter for animals. The third is air pollution: factories, cars and power stations emit smoke. We can help: reduce waste, sort it, save electricity and use cloth bags.
Worked examples
If we fill a bottle at home and drink from our own bottle, there is less plastic.
If we write on both sides of the paper, we save paper and trees.
Class activity
Craft “Bird feeder”: an adult cuts a hole in the side of a large plastic bottle. We paint it, fill it with seeds and hang it on a tree in the yard. We gave plastic waste a second life! Safety: only an adult cuts the bottle; children use scissors carefully.
Practice
1
Why are trees important? Give 2 reasons.
they give oxygen, shelter for animals and shade
2
Name 2 ways of reducing waste.
For example: cloth bag, own bottle
3
What pollutes the air?
smoke from factories, cars and power stations
