Cities and villages
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 34–37
GoalDescribe how a city and a village are alike and different, and understand that they depend on each other.
New words
city · shaharvillage · qishloqfarmer · dehqonfactory · zavod
Explanation
Long ago people lived in small communities, often near a river or lake. As the population grew, big villages became cities. In a village people live in houses with yards, grow gardens and keep animals. A city has tall multi-storey buildings, factories, museums, theatres and wide streets. The village supplies the city with vegetables, fruit, grain for bread and milk. The city sends machines, clothes and furniture to the village.
Worked examples
A tractor is built in a factory and used in the field by a tractor driver.
Because many people live in a city, metro trains and buses are needed.
Class activity
“City or village?” game: the teacher says a word (stadium, vegetable plot, theatre, factory, greenhouse, high-rise, barn, park). Children stand on the left for city and on the right for village; if both, in the middle. Then trace the route of bread: field → city shop.
