Explanation

At the centre of the Solar System is the Sun. It is a yellow star and the main source of heat and light. Eight planets circle the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Earth goes once round the Sun in about 365 days; this is a year. Earth’s path is called its orbit. Earth also spins around its own axis: one turn takes 24 hours, one day and night. The side facing the Sun has day, the opposite side has night. The Sun is one of billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

Worked examples
When it is day for us, it is night in countries on the other side of Earth.
Five days means Earth has turned around its axis 5 times.
Class activity

“Day and night” model: in a dark room a desk lamp (or torch) is the Sun and a globe or ball is Earth. Stick a bit of paper on the ball where Uzbekistan is. Turn the ball slowly: when is Uzbekistan lit (day) and when dark (night)? Safety: do not look straight into the lamp and do not touch a hot lamp.

Practice
1
How many planets are in the Solar System?
2
How many days does Earth take to go round the Sun?
3
Why do day and night alternate?
