Explanation

People made many things around us: school supplies, clothes, toys, dishes, furniture, vehicles. They are made of different materials. Wood is hard and burns easily. Clay makes bricks and dishes: it is soft when wet and hard after firing. Metal is strong and cold. Wool is soft and keeps warmth. Glass is also widely used, and plastic is one of the newest materials. The same object can be made from different materials: a spoon can be wooden, metal or plastic.

Worked examples
Mittens: wool; plate: clay; scissors: metal; table: wood.
Metal, plastic and paper can be recycled, so we sort rubbish.
Class activity

Experiment “Which material lets water through?”: drop one drop of water on paper, cloth, a plastic bag, a piece of wood and foil. On which did the water soak in and on which did it stay as a drop? Record the result in a table. Then find 5 things in the classroom and say what they are made of. Safety: do not touch sharp or breakable things.
