Explanation

Long ago people travelled far on foot, by horse, camel or donkey, and later carts appeared. In 1886 the German engineer Karl Benz built the first petrol-powered car. Transport is divided into land, water and air transport. There is also passenger transport and cargo transport. An important feature of transport is speed: faster transport covers the same distance in less time. The fastest transport is the aeroplane.

Worked examples
A bus is land and passenger transport; a lorry is land and cargo transport.
A person on foot walks roughly 4–5 km an hour; a car goes much faster.
Class activity

Experiment “Why do we need wheels?”: make a slope from a book and let a toy car and an eraser of similar weight slide down. Which goes farther? Wheels reduce friction. Then sort transport pictures into 3 groups: land, water, air.

Practice
1
Who built the first petrol car and when?
2
Give 2 examples of air transport.
3
What is the fastest way to go from Tashkent to Samarkand?
