The nose, an amazing wonder

Textbook: Part 1, pp. 21–23
GoalKnow what the nose does; tell pleasant and unpleasant smells apart; understand that smell can warn of danger.
New words
nose · burunsmell · hidpleasant · yoqimliperfumer · attor
Explanation

We sense smells through the nose. Flowers and fresh bread smell pleasant; spoiled food smells unpleasant. The nose warns us of danger: it tells us when food has gone bad or when there is smoke or gas. Everything has its own smell. A person who makes perfumes is called an attor (perfumer). If you smell gas or smoke, tell an adult at once.

Worked examples
A bakery smells of hot bread; a hospital smells of medicine.
We can tell by the smell when milk has gone sour.
Class activity

Experiment “How well does the nose tell smells apart?”: blindfold a friend with a scarf. Hold pieces of apple, banana, bread and onion in turn under the nose. The friend guesses what it is. Then let them pinch their nose: how does the sense of smell change? Safety: use only foods the child normally eats and has no allergy to; hold them near, do not touch the nose.
