Explanation

Standing in a field or on a hill, we see a line where land and sky seem to meet. This is the horizon. We can never reach it: as we approach, it moves away. The world has four main directions: north, south, east, west. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you face north, south is behind you, east on your right and west on your left. A compass needle always points north because it is magnetic.

Worked examples
In the morning, if the Sun is on your right side, you are facing north.
Direction abbreviations: Shi — north, Ja — south, Sha — east, G‘a — west.
Class activity

Experiment “Make my own compass”: with an adult, stroke a sewing needle 30 times in one direction with a magnet. Push it through a small piece of cork or foam and float it in a bowl of water. The needle slowly turns and lines up north–south. Compare with a real compass. Safety: only an adult handles the needle; keep magnets away from phones and bank cards.

Practice
1
In which direction does the Sun rise and in which does it set?
2
Facing north, which direction is on your right?
3
Where does the compass needle point?
