Consolidation lesson (word choice)
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 42–45
GoalConsolidate Chapter II: apply word choice, taboo, euphemism and pronoun stylistics together in the analysis of one situation.
New words
code name · shartli belgi (kod nomi)speech situation · nutq vaziyatiword choice · so‘z tanlashnorm · me’yor
Explanation
In this lesson the norms of word use are gathered into one sequence of checks. First the speech situation is established: who speaks to whom, where and why. Then words are checked by meaning, style and combination (appropriate or not). Next comes the question whether the topic is delicate: if so, the taboo is taken into account and a soft expression or euphemism is chosen, but not overdone. Finally pronouns are reviewed: redundant ones are dropped, and where respect is needed the forms siz, ular, o‘zlari are used. Where secrecy or brevity is required, code names are used: in dispatcher, military or rescue communication the names of persons and places are replaced by codes.
Worked examples
Analysis: “– Hoy, Karim, sen kecha nega kelmading? – Men betob bo‘lib qoldim, men tuzalgach kelaman”. Said to a teacher: “– Karim, kecha nega kelmadingiz? – Betob bo‘lib qoldim, tuzalgach kelaman, ustoz”. (Respect with siz, no redundant men, no rude hoy.)
Code name: a dispatcher addresses a station as “Bahor-1” on the radio, and its real name is not said openly.
Class activity
“Four checks”: groups analyse a given conversation in four steps – situation, word choice, taboo/euphemism and pronoun – and read out the corrected version.
Practice
1
List the sequence of checks from Chapter II.
Situation → meaning, style, combination of words → taboo/euphemism → pronouns.
2
Which is euphemism, neutral, dysphemism: ko‘z yumdi, o‘ldi, yer tishladi? Which ground of taboo fits?
