The stylistics of pronouns

Textbook: Part 2, pp. 38–41
GoalTell apart the stylistic functions of pronouns (emphasis, modesty, respect, concealment) and avoid redundant pronouns.
New words
personal pronoun · kishilik olmoshiemphasis · ta’kidhonorific form · hurmat shaklipredicate · kesim
Explanation

In Uzbek, person and number are also understood from the ending in the predicate (bordim, bordingiz), so in conversation the pronouns men, sen, u are used only when emphasis is needed: “Men emas, Sardor yozdi” (Not I, Sardor wrote it). Constantly saying men sounds arrogant; biz (we) expresses modesty or appears in an author’s speech as “bizningcha”, “fikrimizcha” (in our opinion). Siz is an expression of respect and in formal letters may be capitalised (Sizga). For an elder, ular and o‘zlari are also used with respect for one person: “Bobom keldilar, o‘zlari sizni so‘rayaptilar” (My grandfather has come, he himself is asking for you). Sometimes a pronoun works as a euphemism, replacing a name. In a literary text excessive repetition of personal pronouns weakens the style.

Worked examples
Redundant pronoun: “Men kecha men kutubxonaga bordim” → “Kecha kutubxonaga bordim” (I went to the library yesterday). If emphasis is needed: “Kutubxonaga men bordim, u emas” (I went to the library, not he).
Respect: “Direktorimiz hozir majlisda, ular tushlikdan keyin qabul qiladilar” (Our director is at a meeting now; he will receive visitors after lunch).
Class activity

“Save the pronouns”: teams condense a short text with 10 redundant pronouns; the shortest version that keeps the meaning wins.

Practice
1
Why are men and sen often omitted in conversation?
2
Condense: “U ertalab turdi. U yuvindi. U maktabga ketdi”.
3
Which sentence shows respect for an elder: A) “Bobom keldi”, B) “Bobom keldilar”?
4
Why does repeating “men” many times in a row sound unpleasant?
