Explanation

A compound word is formed from two or more words and names one concept. Compounds whose parts have fused into one meaning and are said with one stress are written together: ko‘zoynak (spectacles), tilshunos (linguist), sutemizuvchi (mammal). Combinations whose parts still keep their own meaning and stress are written apart: ta’mir qilmoq (to repair), sotib olmoq (to buy), Sirdaryo viloyati (Syrdarya region). Paired words (ota-ona, katta-kichik) and repeated words (ketma-ket, yuzma-yuz) are written with a hyphen. A form made with the auxiliary suffix -(a)ver is written together (yozaverdi, “kept writing”), while forms such as yozib berdi (wrote for someone) are written apart. Words formed with parts like avto-, foto-, video-, eko-, mini-, bio- are normally written together (avtoturargoh, car park; ekotizim, ecosystem). In doubtful cases the spelling dictionary decides.

Worked examples
Ko‘zoynak (together: one concept, one stress) – sotib olmoq (apart: two words, each with its own meaning).
With a hyphen: ota-ona, ketma-ket, navbatma-navbat. Together: videoroliq, mikroavtobus, ekotizim.
Class activity

“Spelling referee”: two teams place expressions from cards in the columns “together”, “apart” or “hyphen” and then check with the spelling dictionary.
