Pronunciation and spelling
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 3–6
GoalExplain the difference between pronunciation (orthoepy) and spelling (orthography) and tell apart the groups of words whose sound and spelling do not match.
Pronunciation fixes how a word is said in speech, and spelling fixes how it is written. Uzbek spelling does not rely on sound alone; it also keeps the structure of the word visible. If everyone wrote a word just as they hear it, one word would take dozens of shapes and written communication would become difficult. The gap shows up mainly in two groups: loanwords in their base form and Uzbek words that change when a suffix is added. For example, javob (answer) is often said “javop”, but in javobim and javoblar the b returns, so b is always written. Some changes are shown in writing (tilak – tilagi), others are not (yopdi is pronounced “yopti”). When in doubt, one consults the spelling and pronunciation dictionaries.
Worked examples
“Javob”: pronounced “javop”, written javob. In suffixed forms the two agree: javobim, javoblar. That is why b is written in the base form too.
Shown in writing: tilak – tilagi (wish), qishloq – qishlog‘i (village), o‘rin – o‘rni (place). Not shown: yopdi [yopti] (closed), shanba [shamba] (Saturday), avtomat [aftomat] (automatic machine).
Class activity
“Said – written” game: the teacher pronounces one word, pairs check it in a dictionary, write it correctly in the notebook and show the difference from its pronunciation in brackets.
Practice
1
How do pronunciation and spelling differ?
Pronunciation concerns how a word is said; spelling concerns how it is written.
2
Sort into two groups: tilagi, yopdi [yopti], shanba [shamba], qishlog‘i.
Shown in writing: tilagi, qishlog‘i. Not shown: yopdi, shanba.
3
Add -im to hisob (account, calculation) and say what happens to b in pronunciation.
Hisobim: b stays voiced; in the base form it can be said “hisop”.
4
Why do we not write “javop”, although it is said that way?
Because in javobim, javoblar the b is heard; a single spelling shows the link between the forms and reduces errors.
