Working with text and dictionary. Congratulation and condolence texts
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 23–25
GoalKnow the structure, language and etiquette of congratulation and condolence texts and write them to suit the situation.
Congratulation and condolence texts are important genres of speech etiquette. A congratulation contains an address, the reason (holiday, birthday, success), sincere wishes and a signature; the tone is uplifted, and the wishes are concrete and brief. A condolence has a serious, calm tone: an address, sharing the sorrow, good qualities of the deceased and wishing patience to the relatives. In such texts, especially in formal letters, the pronoun siz (you, polite) may be written with a capital letter as a mark of respect (Sizga, Sizning). Jokes, rude words and excess detail are out of place in condolences. The writer adapts the text to the addressee’s age, profession and relationship: a congratulation to a friend is freer, an official one is normative and concise.
Worked examples
Congratulation: “Dear Ilhom aka! I sincerely congratulate you on your birthday. I wish you good health, abundance for your family and success in your work. With respect, your pupil Madina. 12 March.”
Condolence: “Dear Qodir aka! The news of the passing of your father, Sobirjon aka, shook me deeply. We will always remember him kindly. I express my deep sympathy to you and your family and wish you patience.”
Class activity
“Two letters”: pairs write a 3–4 sentence congratulation to a teacher for the Navro‘z holiday and a condolence for a neighbour who lost a relative, and compare the tone.
Practice
1
What parts does a congratulation text consist of?
An address, the reason, wishes and a signature (date).

Turn “Salom, Karim! Tug‘ilgan kuning muborak!” into a respectful formal congratulation.
For example: “Hurmatli Karim Rahimov! Sizni tavallud kuningiz bilan chin dildan tabriklayman.”
3
Which expression is out of place in a condolence: A) “Sizga chuqur hamdardlik bildiraman”, B) “Hammamiz bir kun ketamiz, shuning uchun bo‘pti-da, xafa bo‘lmang”?
B: a cold, careless tone; it does not console and may sound offensive.
