Explanation
In this lesson the general order of editing a text is consolidated. First, idioms, proverbs and descriptive expressions are checked for fit: an idiom may equal a word but is coloured, a proverb is a complete sentence, and a descriptive expression is out of place in a scientific or official text. Then suffixes are examined: a plural after a numeral, a comparative with “eng” and an ordinal suffix after a digit are redundant, while the case and the variant must be chosen appropriately. Next the construction of sentences (conciseness, completeness of correlative conjunctions, vague pronouns) and finally punctuation (direct speech, address, dash) are checked. If you follow this order, you will find mistakes quickly both in exam tests and in written work.
Worked examples
Faulty text: “Yigirma o‘quvchilar 9-inchi sinfdan beri tanlovga tayyorlandi. Garchi mavzu qiyin bo‘lsa, ular eng yaxshiroq natijaga intildi. Ustoz dedi Yetti o‘lchab bir kes”.
Corrected text: Yigirma o‘quvchi 9-sinfdan beri tanlovga tayyorlandi. Garchi mavzu qiyin bo‘lsa-da, ular eng yaxshi natijaga intildi. Ustoz dedi: «Yetti o‘lchab, bir kes». Six mistakes were corrected (plural, ordinal, correlative conjunction, comparative, colon with quotation marks, comma inside the proverb).
Class activity
“Editing contest”: two teams get the same faulty text; the team that finds more mistakes in the given time and explains the reasons correctly wins.
