The choice of suffixes
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 63–65
GoalChoose the right variant of a suffix and tell apart the differences and synonymy of case suffixes.
New words
suffix variant · qo‘shimcha varianticase · kelishiksynonymous forms · ma’nodosh shakllarword-forming suffix · so‘z yasovchi qo‘shimcha
Explanation
One suffix may have several forms: the dative case comes as -ga, -ka, -qa. Normally -ga is written (maktabga, tog‘ga), after k it is -ka (eshikka, yurakka) and after q it is -qa (quloqqa). In classical poetry the ablative form -din occurs, while in present-day literary speech -dan is used. The choice of case changes the meaning: “Do‘stimni kutdim” – I waited for my friend; “Do‘stimdan kutdim” – I expected something (help) from my friend. Sometimes cases are synonymous: “sovg‘aga xursand bo‘ldi” – “sovg‘adan xursand bo‘ldi” (was glad about the present). Word-forming suffixes are also chosen by usage: hosildor yer (fertile land), kuchli odam (a strong person) – not “hosilli”, “kuchdor”; suhbatlashmoq (to converse) – not “suhbatlanmoq”. The suffix -ni shows a definite object: “kitob o‘qiyman” (I read books in general), “kitobni o‘qiyman” (I read that particular book).
Difference in meaning: “Do‘stimni kutdim” ≠ “Do‘stimdan kutdim”. Synonymy: “g‘alabaga xursand bo‘ldim” – “g‘alabadan xursand bo‘ldim” (I was glad about the victory).
Class activity
“Pick the suffix”: the teacher reads sentences with brackets (eshik…, quloq…, tog‘…) and students write the correct variant on the board.
Practice
1
State the variants of the dative case and when each is used.
-ga (normally), -ka (after k), -qa (after q).
2
Add the dative: eshik, quloq, tog‘, yurak, maktab.
Eshikka, quloqqa, tog‘ga, yurakka, maktabga.
3
Explain the difference in meaning between “Do‘stimni kutdim” and “Do‘stimdan kutdim”.
In the first, the friend’s arrival was awaited; in the second, some help or action was expected from him.
4
Why do we say suhbatlashmoq and not “suhbatlanmoq”?
Because -lash expresses a joint action (a conversation is held together); this combination has become the norm.
