Active learning (A)
Textbook: pp. 10–13
GoalExpressing purpose with the infinitive of purpose (to + verb). Talking about active learning with the terms active/passive learner, learning style, get feedback.
New words
active learner · faol o‘rganuvchilearning style · o‘rganish uslubiget feedback · fikr-mulohaza olishcollaborate · hamkorlik qilmoq
Explanation
We use to + the base form of the verb to show why someone does something: I use flashcards to remember new words. This pattern answers the question “why?” and can be replaced by in order to: I use flashcards in order to remember new words. For a negative purpose we use in order not to: I write notes in order not to forget the dates. In a more formal style so as to / so as not to are also possible: She left early so as not to miss the bus. An active learner builds knowledge by speaking, writing and doing, while a passive learner mostly reads or listens. When the subject of both parts is the same we do not repeat it: I joined a club to practise speaking (not “to I practise”).

Class activity
“Why do you...?” game: in pairs one student names a habit (I read aloud every morning) and the partner adds a purpose with to (to improve my pronunciation).

Why is “Because help” a wrong answer to “Why do you study with a friend?” Give a correct answer.
After because we need a full clause. Correct: Because we help each other, or: To help each other.
