Explanation

The Future Simple = will + base verb (negative: will not / won’t). Uses: 1) predictions, especially with an opinion: I think it will be difficult. 2) decisions made at the moment of speaking: The phone is ringing – I’ll answer it. 3) promises and offers: I will help you with the project. Be going to is for plans made earlier or predictions with present evidence: I’m going to apply to a university (plan); Look at those clouds – it’s going to rain. A good goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and has a deadline (SMART): I will learn 20 new words every week until June. Probably, definitely and perhaps show how sure we are: I will probably pass.

Worked examples
I will take the mock test on Saturday, and I think I will score higher than last time.
I’m going to study medicine, so I will definitely need strong biology.
Class activity

SMART goal: a student turns a vague goal into a SMART one (I want to improve English → I will learn 20 words a week until June); a partner evaluates it.

Practice
1
Choose will or be going to: Look at the sky – it ___ rain.
2
Complete: ‘I’ve forgotten my pen.’ – ‘Don’t worry, I ___ lend you one.’
3
Make a promise with will: you and your friend’s birthday.
4
Why is “I want to be better at English” a weak goal?
