Explanation

The part of a straight line between two points is called a segment. A segment has a start and an end — its endpoints. We call a segment AB. Segments joined end to end make a broken line. Each segment is a link of the broken line.

Worked examples
A •————• B — this is segment AB.
A zigzag ╱╲╱╲ is a broken line with 4 links.
Class activity

Children mark 3 points (A, B, C), join them one after another and say how many segments they made.

Practice
1
Three points A, B, C are marked on a line. How many segments are there?
2
How many endpoints does a segment have?
3
A broken line has 5 links. How many segments is it made of?
4
Calculate along the broken line: 3 → +4 → −2 → +5
