Explanation
The number zero is written with the digit 0 and means “nothing”. An empty plate has 0 apples. Adding 0 or taking away 0 does not change a number: 5 + 0 = 5, 5 − 0 = 5. Taking a number away from itself gives 0: 5 − 5 = 0.
Worked examples
The teacher brought 9 prizes and gave out all 9: 9 − 9 = 0. No prizes are left.

Class activity
“Empty hand” game: the teacher hides a pebble in one hand or none. Children guess “1” or “0”.
