Flat and solid shapes

Explanation

Flat shapes can be drawn on paper: circle, oval, square, triangle, rhombus, rectangle. Solid shapes can be held in your hand and take up space: sphere (ball), cube (dice), cylinder (glass), cone (ice-cream cone), pyramid, cuboid (box).

Worked examples
A ball is a sphere; its shadow is a circle.
Each face of a cube is a square.
Class activity

Put different objects on a table (ball, box, glass, toy block). Children sort them into two groups: “rolls” and “does not roll”.
