Parts of a subtraction
Textbook Part 1, pp. 68–69
GoalKnow and use the words minuend, subtrahend and difference.
New words
minuend (the starting number) · kamayuvchisubtrahend (the number taken away) · ayriluvchidifference · ayirma
Explanation
In 8 − 3 = 5: 8 is the minuend (it gets smaller), 3 is the subtrahend (it is taken away), and 5 is the difference. Minuend − subtrahend = difference. The difference is never bigger than the minuend.
Worked examples
Mum bought 10 eggs and needs 6 for a cake: 10 − 6 = 4. Minuend 10, subtrahend 6, difference 4.
Minuend 9, subtrahend 2 → difference 7.
Class activity
“Who is who?” — children point to each number in a sum on the board and name it. Then partners check each other’s sums.
