Rectangles and squares: problems
Textbook Part 4, pp. 20–21
GoalSolve practical problems with the sizes of rectangles and squares.
New words
map · xaritawill it fit? · sig‘adimi?dimension / size · o‘lcham
Explanation
To know whether one thing fits inside another, compare their dimensions (length and width). A square box (18 cm) fits in a rectangular bag (20 cm by 30 cm), because 18 < 20 and 18 < 30.
Worked examples
On a map the market square is 4 cm by 2 cm: P = 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 12 cm.
Tourists bought 12 skullcaps and 25 ceramic bowls: 12 + 25 = 37 souvenirs.
Class activity
“Will it fit?”: children measure boxes and a notebook, pencil case and book, predict what fits where, then check.
