Explanation

In increasing order numbers go from smallest to largest: 2, 5, 7, 9. In decreasing order from largest to smallest: 9, 7, 5, 2. To compare expressions, first work out each value, then compare the numbers.

Worked examples
8, 3, 6 → increasing: 3, 6, 8; decreasing: 8, 6, 3.
4 + 3 ... 9 → 7 < 9
Class activity

5 children each get a number card. They line up in increasing order, then in decreasing order.

Practice
1
Write in increasing order: 7, 2, 10, 5
2
Write in decreasing order: 4, 9, 1, 6
3
Put the sign: 6 + 2 ... 9
4
Put the sign: 10 − 3 ... 7
