Explanation
10 is not written with one digit but with two: 1 and 0. Two hands have 10 fingers. Bonds of 10: 9 + 1, 8 + 2, 7 + 3, 6 + 4, 5 + 5 and the other way round. Learning these “friends of ten” by heart is very important!
Worked examples

Mum bought 10 eggs and used 6 for a cake: 10 − 6 = 4 left.
Class activity
“Friend of ten”: the teacher shows a number on fingers (e.g. 7); children count the folded fingers and say its friend (3).
