Explanation
The number nine is written with the digit 9. Bonds of 9: 8 + 1, 7 + 2, 6 + 3, 5 + 4 and the other way round. In a chain, each answer becomes the starting number for the next step.
Worked examples
Chain: 9 → −6 → 3 → +5 → 8 → −4 → 4 → +3 → 7
The school year is 9 months; 1 month of it is holidays. Study time: 9 − 1 = 8 months.
Class activity
Children stand in a circle. The teacher says 9 and throws a ball: the catcher says one part of 9, the next child says the other part.
