Explanation
The number four is written with the digit 4. We can make 4 in different ways: 3 + 1, 2 + 2, 1 + 3. Tables, chairs and cars often have 4 legs or wheels. 4 children make 2 pairs.
Worked examples
🔴🔴🔴🔵 → 3 + 1 = 4; 🔴🔴🔵🔵 → 2 + 2 = 4
There were 4 performers at a concert and 1 more joined: 4 + 1 = 5.
Class activity
“Number house” game: draw a house with 4 on the roof. Children fill each floor with a bond of 4: 1 and 3, 2 and 2, 3 and 1.
