Explanation
The number three is written with the digit 3. 3 = 2 + 1 = 1 + 2. We can tell a story from a picture: “There were 3 glasses. 1 broke. 2 were left.” That means 3 − 1 = 2.
Worked examples
🐦🐦 + 🐦 (flew in) = 3 birds → 2 + 1 = 3
3 − 2 = 1, 3 − 1 = 2
Class activity
Each child gets 3 buttons and splits them between two hands in different ways, saying the bond: “2 and 1”, “1 and 2”, “3 and 0”.
