Объяснение
Gianni Rodari (1920–1980) was an Italian writer and poet, the author of funny poems and tales for children. In «Чем пахнут ремёсла?» every trade has its own smell: the baker smells of bread, the carpenter of wood shavings, the driver of petrol. The poet says that idleness has no smell at all. So work gives a person a smell, that is, meaning and value. In Russian «ремесло» is a trade done with one's hands. When working with tools, an adult helps; petrol is dangerous, and we must not even sniff it.
Примеры
About trades. «Пекарь пахнет свежим хлебом. Столяр пахнет деревом и стружками. Шофёр пахнет бензином. А у лентяя нет никакого запаха. Тот, кто трудится, приносит людям пользу. Поэтому мы уважаем людей труда.» (The baker smells of fresh bread. The carpenter smells of wood and shavings. The driver smells of petrol. But the lazybones has no smell at all. A person who works brings benefit to people. That is why we respect working people.)
Words: «пекарь, столяр, шофёр, лентяй». The suffix «-арь/-яр» sometimes names a profession: «пекарь, столяр, маляр» (baker, carpenter, house painter).
