Joyful Mathematics: Chapter 3
GoalCount two groups together to find how many there are in all.
New words
together · put into one groupin all · the total numbercount all · count every thing once
Explanation

Sometimes we have two groups. To find how many in all, put them together. Then count every thing once. We can also count the first group, and then keep counting on the second group. Say the last number. That is how many in all.

Worked examples
3 mangoes and 2 apples. Together there are 5 fruits.
2 groups of 4 birds. Together there are 8 birds.
When you count a picture with many kinds of things, count each kind on its own.
Class activity

Market count. Put 5 spoons in one bowl and 3 spoons in another. How many spoons in all? Put them together and count. Try other groups, with no more than 9 in all.
