Explanation
After 5 comes 6. Then 7, 8 and 9. Touch each thing once as you count. Do not touch one thing twice. Say the last number out loud. That is how many there are. 9 is one more than 8.
Worked examples
Count the mangoes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. There are 6 mangoes.
The ten-frame shows 7 dots. 5 are in the top row and 2 are in the bottom row.
Count the diyas: 9. We say nine.
Class activity
Treasure count. Collect 6 to 9 small things such as seeds, pebbles or buttons. Put them in a line. Count by touching each one. Then mix them up and count again. Do you get the same number?
