Joyful Mathematics: Chapters 5–7
GoalCompare height, weight and amounts, and measure with hands and feet.
New words
taller, shorter · about heightheavier, lighter · about weightholds more · has room for more
Explanation
We can compare things. The horse is taller than the rabbit. A bag is heavier than a pencil. A jar holds more than a cup. To measure length, we count handspans, fingers or foot lengths. Use big units for long things and small units for small things.
Worked examples
A school bag is heavier than a pencil.
A jar holds more than a cup.
A mat is 6 handspans long. A small seed is less than 1 finger long.
Class activity
Compare and sort. Find six things at home. Say which is the tallest and which is the shortest. Say which is the heaviest. Measure one thing with your handspan and another with your foot lengths. Tell a grown-up your numbers.
