Write the take-away sentence

Joyful Mathematics: Chapter 5
GoalWrite a take-away sentence for a story or a picture.
New words
start · how many we have at firstgone · how many are taken awayminus sentence · numbers with − and =
Explanation

Look at the picture. Count how many there are at the start. Count how many are crossed out. The rest are left. For 10 cupcakes with 4 crossed out we write 10 − 4 = 6. We say: ten minus four equals six.

Worked examples
6 − 1 = 5. One auto rickshaw drives away.
8 − 6 = 2. Six balloons are crossed out.
5 − 5 = 0. If all go away, none are left. That is zero.
Class activity

Make a mystery sentence. The grown-up shows a minus sentence, for example 6 − 2. The child puts out 6 small things, takes 2 away and says how many are left. Then the child writes the answer. Try 5 sentences.
