Review: telling and showing
Discover Term 2: Axes 3–4
GoalRemember how we tell others with senses, stories, numbers, graphs and art.
New words
communicate · to tell others what we think, feel or knowgallery · a place where people look at art
Explanation
We communicate when we tell others what we think, feel or know. We use words, pictures, numbers, art and our bodies. With our senses we describe things: sweet, rough, loud. A story has characters, a setting, and a beginning, a middle and an end. Numbers tell the time, the price, how many and how heavy. In a bar graph the tallest bar is the most. Art lets us tell about ourselves in paintings, photographs, statues, masks and plays. A good communicator speaks clearly, listens well and gives kind feedback.
Worked examples
Youssef’s story: first he buys a balloon. Next the wind blows and the balloon floats away. Last a friend catches it.
In a survey of favourite animals, camels got the most votes. Horses got the fewest.
| number | what it tells |
|---|---|
| 10 pounds | price |
| 9:00 | time |
| 2 kg | how heavy |
Class activity
Show what I learned: choose your favourite thing from this term and draw it. Tell a three-part story about it, with a beginning, a middle and an end. Add one number and one describing word. Ask a friend for kind feedback.
