Explanation
A picture can tell a story. We look at the people, the place and what is happening. We ask: Who is here? Where are they? What is happening? When we draw our own story, we choose a favourite place and a favourite character. Then we add details, such as colours, clothes, weather and things around them. Details tell more about the story.
Worked examples
In this picture we see a girl, a boat and the river. Who? A girl. Where? By the river. What? She watches the boat.
Seif’s favourite place is the garden. He adds details: a tree, a bird and the sun.
Jana’s favourite character is a friendly camel. She gives it a red scarf and a big smile.
Class activity
My place and my character: with a grown-up, draw your favourite place. Draw a favourite character in it (a child, an animal or someone you invent). Add three details. Show a friend and let them say who, where and what.
Practice
1
Which question asks about the place: who, where or what?
Where.
2
Look at the three pictures. What story do they tell?
A boy kicks a football into the goal.
3
Name two details you could add to a drawing of a market.
For example: fruit, people, a donkey or a sunshade.
4
Why do we add details to a picture?
They tell more about the story and help others understand it.
