Review: the world around us
Discover Term 2: Axes 3–4
GoalRemember living and non-living things, magnets, the Sun’s path, and how to save water and stay clean.
New words
attract · to pull something towards it, like a magnet doesliving · alive: it grows and needs food and water
Explanation
A tree and a cat are living things: they grow and need water. A rock is not living. A bicycle is made by people. A magnet attracts things made of iron or steel, like a nail or a paper clip. It does not attract paper, wood or cloth. The Sun comes up in the east in the morning and goes down in the west in the evening. We never look straight at the Sun. We save water when we turn off the tap. We wash our hands with soap before we eat.
Worked examples
A magnet test: the paper clip and the nut and bolt stick. The feather does not.
The Sun in the sky: morning, midday and night.
Youssef turns off the tap while he brushes his teeth. He washes his hands with soap before lunch.
Class activity
Review hunt: with a grown-up, find at home one living thing, one thing that is not living, and one thing made by people. Test two things with a fridge magnet (keep magnets away from phones and cards) and sort them: sticks or does not stick.
