Numbers have words

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 1, p. 27
GoalRead and say the number words from zero to ten.
New words
number word · a number written with letters, like fourzero · none; the number 0coin · a round piece of money
Explanation

We can write a number with a digit, like 3, or with letters, like three. The letters make a number word. Coins sometimes show number words instead of digits. Stories often use number words too, like three little ducks. Here are the first words: zero, one, two, three, four, five. Say each word out loud and point to its number.

Our coins show 1c, 2c, 5c and 10c. Some coins show words instead, like one, two, five and ten. The word five means the number 5.
In a story, ‘three little ducks’ means 3 ducks. The word three tells us how many.
Class activity

Word hunt: look for number words at home, in a book, on a packet or on a poster. Write the number and the word for two that you find. Then make cards for the words zero to ten and cards with the numbers 0 to 10, and match each word to its number.
