Spots and words

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 1, p. 28
GoalCount spots or objects and say the number and read its number word.
New words
spots · the dots on a dice, a domino or a cardword · letters that make a name, like seventen frame · a box with 10 spaces, 5 on top and 5 below
Explanation

Spots show us how many. Count the spots, then say the number and read its word. One spot is the number 1 and the word one. Three spots are the number 3 and the word three. A ten frame shows numbers too. We can write the number above the frame and the word below it. This helps us to remember both.

Worked examples
Count the spots: 3. The number is 3 and the word is three.
A full top row of the ten frame is 5. The number is 5 and the word is five.
A ten frame with 5 and 2 more is 7. The number is 7 and the word is seven.
Class activity

Spot cards: make a card for each number from 1 to 10. Draw that many dots on the front and write the word on the back. Show the front for one second. Say the number and its word. Turn the card over to check the spelling.
