GoalCount sets to 10, show numbers on a ten frame, estimate, and find the number before and after.
New words
count · say the numbers in order, one for each thingestimate · a good guess about how manyten frame · a box with 10 spaces, 5 on top and 5 belowzero · none, nothing at all
Explanation
Let us remember what we know about numbers. We count by saying one number for each object. The last number is how many there are. A ten frame shows a number in two rows of 5. We can estimate first, which means making a good guess, and then count to check. If there is nothing, the number is zero, or 0. On a number track the numbers go in order: 1, 2, 3 up to 10. The number just after 6 is 7. The number just before 6 is 5. In the picture, 6 is blue, with 5 and 7 beside it.
Worked examples
Count the pencils: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. There are 9 pencils.
Zara estimates 5 stars. She counts and finds 6. Her estimate was close, but not exactly right.
This ten frame has a full top row of 5 and 3 more in the bottom row. 5 and 3 make 8.
Class activity
Number detectives: take a handful of up to 10 small things (buttons, beans). Estimate how many, then count and check. Show the number on a paper ten frame. Then say the number that comes before and the number that comes after.
