Putting groups together

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 5, pp. 68–69
GoalPut two groups together and find how many there are altogether.
New words
add · put two groups togetheraltogether · all the things counted togethergroup · a set of things
Explanation

Adding means putting two groups together and finding how many there are in all. That number is how many altogether. First count the objects in one group. Then keep counting through the second group. The last number you say is how many there are altogether. For example, 4 fish in one bowl and 3 fish in another bowl are 7 fish altogether.

Worked examples
+
Nodira has 6 flowers in a vase and picks 2 more. She puts them together. Count on: 7, 8. There are 8 flowers altogether.
+
2 red cars and 5 blue cars are in a box. Together there are 7 cars. We can count all of them, or start at 5 and count on 2 more.
We do not have to count everything again. If you know there are 3 in one group, start from 3 and count on.
Class activity

Two bowls: put some beans, buttons or small stones in each bowl (up to 5 in each). Count the first bowl. Pour the second bowl into it, and count again. Say how many altogether. Play again with new numbers.
