A circle for a set

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 7, pp. 102–103
GoalPut things that match the label inside a circle and things that do not match outside it.
New words
Venn diagram · a picture with a circle that helps us sort thingsinside · in the circleoutside · not in the circle
Explanation

A Venn diagram is a sorting picture. It has a circle with a label. The label tells us the rule. Things that fit the rule go inside the circle. Things that do not fit the rule go outside the circle. If the label says round things, then a ball goes inside. A box goes outside, because a box is not round. Every thing is either inside the circle or outside it.

Worked examples
Look at the picture. The label says round things. The ball, the coin and the plate are round, so they go inside. The book and the box are not round, so they go outside.

The label says has wheels. A bus, a bike and a skateboard go inside. A tree and a hat go outside.
Everything in the circle matches the label. Everything outside does not match the label.
Class activity

Hoop sort: lay a skipping rope or string in a circle on the floor, or draw one on paper. Write a label such as ‘soft things’. Find things around you and put them inside or outside the circle. Does your partner agree with every one?
