Number rhymes

Explanation

A number rhyme is a fun way to learn the order of the numbers. We always say them in the same order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Say the rhyme and clap for every number. A number track is a row of boxes with the numbers in order. Point to each number as you say it. Here is a rhyme to try: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, birds fly up into the sky. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, down they come to rest again!

Point and say: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. The first five boxes are blue and the last five are orange.
The track starts at 1 and ends at 10. After 9 we say 10.
Say the rhyme and show one bird for each number: 5 birds go up and 5 more birds come down. 10 birds in all.
Class activity

Number jumps: write the numbers 1 to 10 on 10 pieces of paper and put them in order on the floor. Jump from one to the next and say each number. Then say the bird rhyme as you jump.
