Explanation

Houses, schools, boxes and balls are all 3D shapes. They are everywhere around us. A 3D shape is solid: you can pick it up and turn it round. A cube is a shape like a dice, with square sides. A sphere is round all over, like a ball. A cylinder is like a tin can, with a flat top and bottom and a curved side. Learn the three names: cube, sphere and cylinder.

A dice is a cube. All its sides are flat squares.
A ball is a sphere. It is round all over.
A tin of beans is a cylinder. It has a flat top, a flat bottom and a curved side.
Class activity

Shape hunt: find three things at home. One should look like a cube (a box or a dice), one like a sphere (a ball or an orange) and one like a cylinder (a tin or a cup). Hold each one in your hand and say its name.
