Comparing numbers

Put a handful of buttons or coins in two piles (up to 10 each). Match them one to one. Which pile has more? How many more?
The child matches pairs. The pile with objects left over has more, and the number left over is how many more.

Count the cars and the trees. Finish: There are fewer ___ than ___.
5 cars and 8 trees. There are fewer cars than trees.

Roll a dice twice. Which number is greater? Say ‘___ is greater than ___’. What if you roll the same number twice?
The child says the greater number. For the same number the answer is ‘they are the same’.

Write one number that is greater than 5 and one number that is less than 5.
Greater: 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10. Less: 1, 2, 3 or 4 (0 is also right).

Build a staircase of up to 10 blocks, books or cups. Ask: how many more does each step have than the step before?
Each step has 1 more than the step before.
