Sorting inside a circle

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 14, pp. 203–207
GoalSort things with a Venn diagram: things that match the rule go inside the circle and the rest go outside.
New words
Venn diagram · a picture with a circle, used to sort thingsrule · what a thing must be to go inside the circleoutside · the place for things that do not match the rule
Explanation

To sort things, we need a rule. A rule is a few words, like ‘yellow things’. In a Venn diagram we draw a circle and write the rule on it. Things that match the rule go inside the circle. Things that do not match go outside the circle. Every thing must go somewhere. For each thing, ask: does it match the rule?

yellow things
Worked examples
yellow thingsbananalemonsuncherrygrasssea
The rule is ‘yellow things’. A banana, a lemon and the sun are yellow, so they go inside the circle. A cherry, grass and the sea are not yellow, so they go outside.
can flybutterflyowlbeecowfish
The rule is ‘can fly’. A butterfly, an owl and a bee can fly, so they go inside. A cow and a fish cannot fly, so they go outside.
you can eat itbreadriceappleeggspooncupplate
The rule is ‘you can eat it’. Count inside: 4 things. Count outside: 3 things. Altogether there are 4 and 3 more, which is 7 things.
Class activity

Hoop game: put a loop of string or a hoop on the floor. Pick a rule, such as ‘things that are blue’. Collect 8 things from the room and sort them: inside the loop or outside it. Can a friend guess your rule just by looking at what is inside?
