Flat shapes

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 2, pp. 42–43
GoalSay that 2D shapes are flat, and name a circle, a square, a triangle and a rectangle.
New words
2D shape · a flat shape, like a drawing on papercircle · a round shapesquare · a shape with 4 sides that are all the same lengthtriangle · a shape with 3 sides
Explanation

A 2D shape is flat, like a shape drawn on paper. You cannot pick it up and turn it round like a ball or a box. That is how 2D shapes and 3D shapes are different. Here are four 2D shapes: a circle, a square, a triangle and a rectangle. A rectangle is like a square, but it is longer on two sides. Look for them around you: a plate is a circle and a window is a rectangle.

Worked examples
Count the circles in this row. There are 3 circles, 1 triangle and 1 square.
A ball is a 3D shape because you can pick it up. A shape drawn on paper is a 2D shape because it is flat.
circle
The bottom of a tin is a circle. If you press the tin in clay or draw round it, you get a 2D circle.
Class activity

Trace and name: draw round the bottom of a tin, a cup and a box. Look at the flat shapes you get. Which are circles? Which are squares or rectangles? Name each one.

Practice

Count the squares.
2
Count the triangles.
3
