Matching sets to words
Learner’s Book 1: Unit 1, pp. 29–30
GoalMatch a set of objects to its number word, draw a set for a number word, and know that zero means none.
New words
match · find the ones that go togetherzero · none; the number 0draw · make a picture with a pencil
Explanation
To match a set to a word, count the objects first. Then find the number word that says how many. A set of 6 matches the word six. Zero means none, so a lunch box with zero apples is empty. When you draw a number of objects, make it easy to see how many. Put them in rows, in pairs or in a ten frame. Then other people can see the number at a glance.
Worked examples
Count the flowers: 5. The word five matches this set.
Set out eight pencils so a friend can see how many at a glance: 4 in the top row and 4 in the bottom row.
This lunch box has zero cherries. It is empty. The number word is zero.
Class activity
Draw and match: one player says a number word from zero to ten. The other player draws that many dots in rows or in a ten frame. Then swap. When someone says zero, draw an empty box.
